About the event

Tabitha P. Ssonko is the Vicar of St. Anselm’s Episcopal Church. A former pastor in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, she pastored three churches in Pennsylvania. Ssonko lead each of these churches in realizing significant transformation. At Monumental AME Church, she led them  in a major capital campaign, The Way Forward, to rebuild the spiritual and physical infrastructure of the oldest African American congregation in the Borough of Steelton, PA.  Under her leadership the church grew its congregation by 250% and returned to worship in its historic building. The church was able to rehabilitate major mechanical systems of the church as well as create a vibrant, on-line presence during the pandemic.

Ssonko is recognized as a transformational leader and visionary. In Lebanon, PA she worked with ecumenical and interfaith partners to provide community outreach. In Steelton she served as the Vice President and Social Justice Chair of the African American Ministerial Alliance of Steelton and Vicinity. She worked with various community partners and the Borough of Steelton to organize the first community garden in Steelton, PA, addressing the issue of Steelton being a food desert. She has received numerous citations from Borough and State Representatives for her leadership and community work.

A native of Baltimore, MD, she graduated from Coppin State University where she completed a Bachelor of Science in African History with a Minor in Political Science, and graduated with a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School. She completed coursework for a Masters of Historic Preservation.
